On May 26th, the fog and misty rain rolled in and gave the inaugural Coaches’ Invitational Golf Tournament a hazard that every player endured quite well. Despite the weather, High Country Caregivers netted over $40,000 in the event this year. The proceeds will be used to support children being raised by their grandparents and other family members.

Attendees were hosted by nine collegiate coaches: Jerry Moore, retired head coach of Appalachian State University; Scott Satterfield, current head coach of University of Loisville; Dave Doeren, head coach of NC State; Shawn Clark, current head coach of ASU; Paul Johnson, retired head coach of Georgia Tech and the U.S. Naval Academy; Mack Brown, current head coach of UNC Carolina; Oval Jaynes, retired head coach of Auburn University; Sparky Woods, coach at UNC Chapel Hill; Shawn Elliot, head coach of Georgia State University.

High Country Caregivers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children who are being raised by their grandparents and other family members, primarily due to the opioid and drug crisis in the High Country. These families receive little to no assistance from the state or federal government. HCC provides services to 107 families and 198 children in Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. They provide everything from legal fees, counseling, therapeutic camps, recreational sports fees, sports equipment, piano lessons, dance lessons, horseback riding lessons and essential need items for these children.
