“Eyes in the Wild” (named by one of our participating youth) is a 9-month nature adventure program.
Each year our staff and a few thoroughly vetted volunteers, take HCC youth on nature adventures throughout the Appalachian wilderness, exploring waterfalls, enjoying spectacular views, and curating special experiences like 2022’s rare Blue Ghost Fireflies night-time hike in May, a 3-day, 2-night overnight backpacking trip, and other camping opportunities generously provided by HCC donors.
This program, which continues yearly from May through October, is made possible by generous grants including the Mitchell Fund of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, the Kathleen Kennedy Foundation, Wee Kirk Presbyterian Church, The Luke Garrison Foundation, Holy Cross Church, and Blue Ridge Energies, as well as the kindness of individual donors and funds raised during various other fundraisers and community events.
Many kinship caregivers work full-time. The children in their care need a safe and engaging summer activity while their caregivers are at work. High Country Caregivers provides scholarship opportunities for children to attend these camps in our service area.
This project is led by former Appalachian State Head football coach, and current High Country Caregivers board member, Jerry Moore. Please consider partnering with us, and Coach Moore, to make an impact in the lives of children throughout the High Country.
