Melinda’s journey with her twin granddaughters began from their birth in October of 2016. Their parents love them, but due to addiction and other issues they are not capable of raising the girls. Melinda stepped up and began to raise her grandchildren as her own. Melinda works as a private duty nurse and provides for the girl’s needs, as no assistance is provided by the state or the parents. Her mother is a “Godsend” as she helps care for the girls while Melinda is at work.
Below is an interview with Melinda about High Country Caregivers.
An Interview with Melinda Bryan
When were you granted emergency custody of the girls?
In April of last year. The girls were in a difficult situation and it was
necessary to go to court. This was a tough decision because I knew how it
would upset my daughter. It was very hard emotionally and financially.
The assistance provided by HCC helped to ease the financial burden.
What is the best thing about being a part of HCC for you as a caregiver?
Just knowing there is a group of people in the same situation I am in.
Knowing that I could talk to someone and have the group meetings to look
forward to. The advice and information given by HCC was very helpful to
access resources for the girls.
Would you recommend HCC to another family experiencing the same
issues?
I would and I have recommended HCC to others. It is a wonderful support
and a great source of hope for those who may not think they can raise their
grandchildren. The help with legal services has been great!.
